The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) compiles crime data reported from State law enforcement agencies. The most recent data are from 2004 and published in the Department of Justice's Hate Crimes Statistics, 2004.
U.S.
In 2004, 2,046 agencies reported 7,649 bias motivated incidents. *
Among the single-bias incidents:
- 53% were racially-motivated.
- 18% were motivated by the victim's religion.
- 16% were motivated by the victim's sexual orientation.
- 13% were motivated by the victim's ethnicity or national origin.
- 0.7 % were disability-motivated.

Illinois
Illinois reported 187 hate incidents. *
- 58% were racially-motivated.
- 12% were motivated by the victim's religion.
- 19% were motivated by the victim's sexual orientation.
- 11% were motivated by the victim's ethnicity.
